The North West region of England is a fairly well-defined area and we draw members from the Midlands to the Scottish borders, and Anglesey in the West and Yorkshire in the East. We organise lectures on a variety of subjects; mainly focused on Japanese gardens, including their origin, and influences on their design. We visit Japanese gardens in the North West, including members gardens, twice a year. Our members have been involved in the design and build of three new Japanese gardens in the North West: one at Walkden gardens in Sale, Manchester; and one each in Willowbrook Hospice, Prescot and Bury Hospice, Bury. The Bury Hospice garden was part of a large project involving the design and build of a gold medal winning show garden for the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park. We have members actively involved in maintaining Walkden garden (a monthly activity), and supporting hospice voluntary groups in their gardens, attendance at these sessions is a great opportunity to practice your gardening skills. The North West region has close ties with other JGS regions and with the Japan Society North West who organize Japanese cultural events. We organize a JGS exhibit at gardening shows, e.g. the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park, and regularly have a stand at the biannual Japan Day held by the Japan Society North West. For details on any of our North West Regional events or to get in touch with this region, please complete the form below.
