About Us

Founded in 1993, the Japanese Garden Society brings together people interested in the gardens of Japan and Japanese gardens in the UK. The Society welcomes amateurs and professionals, garden lovers and garden designers who are interested in Japanese gardens and who wish to share their interests with others.

Garden Visits

Along side our regular garden visits, visits to suppliers and nurseries are also arranged. Such visits include stone yards, artefact suppliers and specialist nurseries. A list of all Japanese gardens open to the public is published in our journal ‘Shakkei’ each year. We also visit gardens in Japan on exclusive Society-run study tours.

Trips to Japan

The Society organises and leads tours to Japan exclusively for members to study gardens and related culture. Usually these tours are for two weeks, sometimes 3. At least a week is spent in Kyoto. Two leaders (volunteer Society members) plan the itinerary and provide guiding to the various locations visited.

Publications

The Society Journal –“Shakkei” Provided free to all members, our high quality journal Shakkei contains many illustrated articles on a wide range of subjects related to Japanese gardens. Most contributions are written by members of the Society, but we include articles by academics in the UK and overseas.

Learning To learn more about Japanese gardens, how to add a Japanese touch to your own garden or how to design and build a garden, select one of the following on offer from the JGS: Talks on Japanese gardens are held at various locations around the country.

Promoting interest in Japanese Garden Culture We are involved in several public garden projects around the country, participate in public shows and events and we have a high quality touring exhibition about Japanese gardens.
