Saturday 2nd:
Introduction by Graham Hardman about Japanese gardens in the UK today, including issues of cultural borrowing. Graham has been Chairman of the JGS since 2003, retiring from the position this year. He has been designing gardens for the past 10 years and has co - ordinated the design and construction of JGS gardens in Birmingham, Norwich, St Helens and Walkden Gardens near Manchester.
Main Event a lecture by Dr Wybe Kuitert entitled ‘How Japan opened up to the west and showed the world its garden culture’. Wybe Kuitert is Professor at the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Seoul National University, Korea. He will be known to many as the author of ‘Themes in the History of Japanese Garden Art’. We are very honoured that Seoul University has allowed him to give this lecture for us and that he has agreed to travel to Cambridge from Seoul to do so.
Sunday 3rd:
A lecture by Dr Jill Raggett on Japanese garden developments in the UK following the opening up of Japan in the 19th century, with an emphasis on the first wave of garden building, perhaps the heyday of such gardens in the UK. Jill is Reader in Gardens and Designed Landscapes, Writtle College, Essex. She has been studying Japanese-style gardens of Britain and Ireland for many years, this being the subject of her PhD.
A talk by Robert Ketchell on how designers today can adapt ideas from the Japanese garden tradition to our different physical and cultural environment here in the UK. Robert has been designing Japanese gardens for many years and runs regular trips to Japan and China to study gardens. He was Chairman of the JGS from 1996 to 2003
Conference Costs:A buffet lunch is included in the ticket price of £24.00 (£20 for JGS members) for one day, or £36.00 (£32.00 for JGS Members) for both days. Admittance is by ticket only and places are limited so early booking is essential.
