JGS Midland Region Special Winter Lectures
December 10 @ 10:30 am - 2:00 pm
A pre-Christmas addition to our normal timetable when we are very pleased to welcome two students who are participating in the Triad scheme currently operating at the world-famous National Trust Hidcote Gardens.
Mizuno-san owns an Omoto (Rhodea japonica) nursery in Japan and will tell us something of the fascinating history of this plant, and how it has influenced wider Japanese horticultural trends. It is also referred to as the Nippon Lily, Sacred Lily and Japanese Sacred Lily, and in Japanese history, highly bred versions were given by one samurai to another as house warming gifts. We therefore look forward to hearing more about the impact of this relatively unspectacular plant.
There is a total change for our second lecture when we will hear from Doi-san an exponent of Kana calligraphy. We are all familiar with Kanji characters, but this is an opportunity to learn more about the alternative Kana script, and to see some actual examples.
