Aims Of The Society

The Japanese Garden Society exists to bring together all those who are interested in Japanese-Style gardens, whether as visitors seeking understanding, as owners seeking advice on conservation, or as designers and builders wishing to develop their professional skills. In this way The Japanese Garden Society caters for amateurs and professionals, garden lovers and garden constructors. The Society welcomes everyone who shares a common interest in this complex and far reaching design philosophy.

What was once an indulgent interest in the exotic for wealthy patrons has today become an internationally recognised aspect of garden design, based on a growing depth of appreciation and understanding. It is the role of The Japanese Garden Society to promote this movement, particularly in Britain, but also in the countries not served by their own national society.

Elements of Japanese garden design are being steadily assimilated into modern garden construction in the west, where they are best introduced on the basis of real understanding. This can be obtained by the informed viewing of the many examples already created in Britain, by appreciation of the master gardens in Japan and by the study of the philosophical basis of garden creation. Not everyone will wish to pursue the topic in equal depth and the Japanese Garden Society seeks to provide interest and information for every level of understanding.
